How to participate in stand-up meetings

for the stand-up mailing list! Under "What nickname do you want people in this group to see?" use your full name. For example "Adam Monsen".

Report on your status

by sending in an email what you've done since the last standup, your current priorities, and if you are blocked.

  • Do this before the daily stand-up call.
  • List your current priorities in order of priority, highest priority first.  If you know what card you are taking up next, include a link to that card.
  • Send a new email, don't reply to an existing email on the list. The subject of the email should minimally include the date in YYYY-MM-DD form, but will ideally include if you are blocked and a few words on your current work focus.
  • Everyone on the product team is encouraged to send these emails.
  • Include the URL of any card mentioned in the standup report, and include either the full title of the card or enough of the title to distinguish it.

Here's a detailed example (less detail/shorter is ok!):

Attend the stand-up meeting

The designated scrummaster will prompt attendees to review stand-up status updates sent to the mailing list at 10:00 AM US/Pacific time.

The scrummaster will initiate the Skype call at 10:10 AM US/Pacific time.

The first order of business is always to unblock people. If you are blocked, get unblocked during the meeting or coordinate to meet with a person or people that can unblock you in a sub-group (outside the meeting).

Once unblocking is complete, state your intention to discuss topics by typing in "TOPIC" followed by the topic you wish to discuss. You may propose multiple topics. "DEV TOPIC" is also used, and these topics are generally left until after more general-interest topics. For example:

TOPIC: v1.5 testing update
DEV TOPIC: snmp monitoring help needed

After a minute or so to give folks time to type in topics, topics may be re-ordered as/if necessary.

Hints

  • Get a video camera so folks can see you. This increases our communication bandwidth.
  • Use a USB headset for optimum audio quality and ease of configuration.
  • Follow the subject line and message format exactly, this will make it easier for folks to quickly parse messages.
