Committed in branches/v1.2.x revision 14120. I didn't do a full patch review,
but at the surface the fix (widening the datatype to Integer from Short) seems
reasonable, and unit tests still pass.
The only concern would be that perhaps Enda doesn't really have more than 2^15
groups, but according to Ryan, they do.

Tested fix on v1.2.x@14121 using steps described in issue 2251.
